How to Prepare for an Interview
How to Prepare for an Interview The interview is scheduled! You are ecstatic, as well you should be! But now what? How will you prepare for an interview? Now that the interview is scheduled, you can really begin preparing and practicing! Youve already done some preliminary research on the company, but now its time to dig deep. The more you know about the company, its competitors and the overall market, the smarter youll appear. Too often people fail to do thorough research and find themselves in a role or company that isnt what they expected. 10 most important steps to prepare for an interview 1. Get a copy of the most current and/or in-depth job description Heres why you need to ask someone in the company for the job description. What theyve posted online may not be the full description or even the most recent version of the job requirements. It isnt unusual for a company to have a different version of the job description for use internally. It may be more descriptive. Theres nothing wrong with asking the person scheduling the interview if they can send you the full job description. You may even reach out to someone you know inside the company and ask what they can find on the internal job posting site. 2. Prepare a STAR story for each of the job requirements. Go through each requirement listed in the job posting and develop an answer for how you meet that specific requirement. A STAR story is a concise and thorough way of mapping out what you did and what the outcome was. Read more here. If you dont have the exact skills the company is asking for, chances are you have done something similar. Develop that story! 3. Prepare answers to the most common interview questions and practice out loud Here is a list of the most popular questions to these questions. It is so important to practice each answer out loud. It sounds different when you speak your answer. Consider video recording yourself to evaluate your answer. Keep refining it until you own it. It shouldnt sound rehearsed. It should sound natural! This takes practice! 4. Craft your opening statement or the answer to tell me about yourself You can pretty much count on this question being asked, so prepare the best 1-minute response. The trick is to answer the question as if you were being asked, why should we hire you. Remember, you only have one minute to summarize the MOST IMPORTANT qualifications. Heres a template: Tell me about yourself 5. Research the company Use the company website to see what the say about themselves. You may even notice on their career page they have interviews with employees and information on what it is like to work there. But dont stop here. Google the company and see what news is being mentioned. Sleuth the company (and interviewers) on LinkedIn. Check out anonymous employee reviews on Glassdoor . If you cant find the company listed anywhere, then visit your local library and speak to a reference librarian! Before the interview, you should reach out to your network and ask what people know about the company. Do this BEFORE you accept an offer. The information you obtain will help you assess the company. Be prepared to answer all of these questions: What do you know about us? What do we do? Who are our competitors? Why do you want to work here? 6. Know something about the people who will be interviewing you! Thank goodness for LinkedIn. Go ahead and see where your interviewers used to work, what organizations and groups they belong to and even check out the recommendations others have written about them. You may want to search for them on Facebook and Google too. 7. Prepare smart questions you will ask! In order to thoroughly understand the job and company, youll want to ask questions! There is a lot you want to know besides just the pay and benefits. Ask questions to learn what will be expected of you, how the team functions and more. Do not wait until the end of the interview to ask your questions. The best interview will be a conversation so plan to ask your questions throughout the interview. Get more ideas here 8. Know what the format of the interview will be If you havent been told what the format of the interview will be, it is your right to ask. You want to be prepared and knowing the format will help you feel more comfortable. Will you be meeting one-on-one, as a panel, via phone, Skype or online video, and how long is the scheduled to last. 9. Bring copies of your resume for each person you will be interviewing with, just in case Dont assume everyone will have a copy of your resume. The copy they have may be an ugly text version, so bring the nicely formatted resume. Printing it on nice quality paper isnt required, however, it does seem more professional. And if you really want to WOW the interviewers, consider bringing an infographic resume to supplement your traditional text resume. 10. Know exact dates If you havent completed an application yet, be sure you have the exact dates and information to complete the application. No, you cant say see attached resume. You need to fully and accurately complete the job application. It is a legal document, so do not lie, exaggerate or embellish. Want to download this checklist? Ive created an easy one-page resource for you The 10 Step Job Interview Prep Checklist. These are some extra points to remember as you head into your interview! Always, always ask what the next steps in the process are and when you can follow up before you leave the interview. Send a Thank You letter that will knock their socks off! You can learn how here. There is only one question you need to walk away from the interview knowing the answer to Do I want this job? Want more interviewing help? Get your copy of âDo I Want This Jobâ

Food for Thought for the week Lean on me - Hallie Crawford
Food for Thought for the week Lean on me Ive been quiet on my blog this past week. I had to make some changes to my support team and I stink at working with HTML so needed someone who could help me with my postings. I am not techno babe when it comes to HTML. Fortunately now, Im back in biz! This past week without having the business support I need, has reminded me of 2 things: 1) During any kind of change, including career transition, you absolutely have to have support. When I was completely changing career paths, from marketing to coaching, I needed my husbands support but forgot to specifically ask for it. I was working in a part time job, coaching on the side, and wasnt doing anything around the house including cooking or shopping for food. Wed decided early on in our marriage that I would cook. He hates to cook and his idea of a meal at that time was macaroni and cheese and a hotdog. You know me, Im a health nut so that doesnt fly. I didnt have time to cook so we started arguing about this. I realized after a few meal discussions that I needed to explain to him that I was in career transition and needed support. We talked, figured out a plan, done. 2) My coaches over time have reminded me of the importance of having support when youre an entrepreneur. Having a solid support team of people makes the difference between treating your business as a hobby vs. a true business. Since Ive had help, my coaching practice has grown by leaps and bounds. AND I felt like I was taking a risk when I initially made the leap in hiring my first VA. This week think about this: Where do you need to ask for support? Where do you hesitate to do so? Its time to overcome that and reach out! Lean on someone. Have a good one. Hallie, Career Coaching Related Posts:Career Support Times ThreePick Your BattlesCreate a Support Team

Instacart Just Cut Workers Pay Rate by 63%
Instacart Just Cut Workers Pay Rate by 63% Instacart, a $2 billion grocery delivery startup, plans to dramatically cut the fees it pays freelance couriers who deliver groceries in several cities. Despite an extended partnership with Whole Foods, the delivery startup seems to be following the lead of several other gig economy startups in trying to rein in costs amid a tighter funding environment, reports The Wall Street Journal. Instacart drivers working in several major markets including San Francisco and Los Angeles will now earn $1.50 per drop-off of pre-packed bags from grocery stores, down from the previous guarantee of $4, in what amounts to a 63% rate cut. The company also slashed by half the commission it pays for each item in an order a driver actually shops for and collects in stores to just 25 cents. The new rates mean that workers, in some cases, would need to triple their deliveries to make the same pay as before. The company claims shoppers will still earn between $15 and $20 per hour, but thatâs based on expectations that drivers will receive tips. Increased competition from companies like Amazon and Google, along with less enthusiastic investor support, have caused similar on-demand startups that rely on contractors to deliver good, run errands, or give rides to get stingy with their compensation too. Instacart is just the latest company in the gig economy to cut contract workers pay rates. Food-delivery startup DoorDash recently lowered the fees it pays delivery people from $6 to $5. Shuddle, a ride service for families, will raise prices by 20%. Even Uber is feeling the pressure: it cut prices in more than 100 U.S. and Canadian cities in order to drum up business. Those cuts carried over to driver pay, with some now earning less than a half-dollar per mile. In Tampa, Fla., for example, drivers now make 49 to 52 cents per mile.

How To Blaze A Trail Lessons From 9 Incredible Leaders
How To Blaze A Trail Lessons From 9 Incredible Leaders OnJune 14, I welches honored to moderate a panel of nine truly spectacular women atThe United State of Womensummit presented by The White House. The panel, which was entitled A Conversation with Trailblazers Making the Case for Gender Diversity across Industries and Sectors, included extraordinary women who have shattered barriers in arenas from business to martial arts to technology to football to the military. As president and co-founder ofFairygodboss, a company devoted to improving the workplace for women everywzu siche, I was heartfully inspired by these women, and also deeply grateful for their courage and perseverance. Their words were wise and generous, and so I hope to share some of them herbeie with you1. Take Risks. To sto off the session,Carla Harris,Vice Chairman of Global Wealth Management at Morgan Stanley, encouraged the group to take risks. As she writes in one of her books,Expect to Win, there is never any real da nger in taking well-thought-out calculated risks. Most people look back and regretnotlagetaking a risk. Risk-taking was one of the primary themes that emerged from session. Its clear that progress and advancement are strongly linked to a willingness to embrace risk. In a profound example of risk-taking,Erica Baker, Build and Release Engineer at SlackTechnologies, confessed to having ignited something of a revolution inside the walls of Google when she exposed pay discrepancies by creating a Google Sheet on which Googlers could share their salaries with their peers. Ericas risk, though perhaps not popular with her former employer, established her as an up-and-coming talent in the tech space and helped create progress for many women in tech around the issue of the gender wage gap.2.Take the high ground.General Ann E. Dunwoody*, US Army, Ret. told me a story about how she advanced up the ranks in the Army as a distinguished paratrooper and as a company commander, and was promoted to Maj or and ordered to report to the 82nd Airborne Division. Yet when she arrived at Fort Bragg, she was shunned while closed-door meetings were held to determine what to do with me, the General writes in her book on Leadership, A Higher Standard. When she was given a menial assignment while other male officers received the high speed jobs she thought about leaving the Army. But she always believed that it was important to stay on the moral high ground and not lower her standards or resort to unproductive tactics like name calling, gossip or innuendos. That worked for her. She didnt stay in the menial job for long and ended up spending six consecutive years in the 82d and became the first female to command a battalion in that storied division. The message is simple, says General Dunwoody. Believe in yourself, never let others dissuade you from something you are passionate about - or they win Never let anyone make decisions or unduly influence something you believe in - or they win. If peo ple quit and take the easy way out (like quitting). instead of trying to make a difference... Whos the real winner and whos the real loser?3. Build diversity from the ground up, and from the inside out.Erica Baker and her colleague,Anne Toth, Vice President of Policy at Slack, spoke about their experience building diversity from day one atSlack Technologies, the fastest-growing business software company ever. Erica and Anne talked about how at Slack, they have been able to successfully build a more gender diverse organization than most in Silicon Valley. They credit the support of their CEO, Stewart Butterfield, as well as changes to policies and practices. For example, they have systematically eliminated years experience required from job descriptions because they understand that women often drop out of the workforce at a certain point. Deborah Rosado Shaw, Senior Vice President and Chief Global Diversity and Engagement Officer atPepsiCoshared a story about the challenges of buildi ng diversity globally across Pepsi. Pepsi is a world leader in diversity practices, yet the company finds itself in uncharted territory on how to encourage female workforce participation in parts of the world - like the Middle East - where its not the cultural norm. Deborahtalked about how difficult it is to integrate women into an office when they are a tiny minority of the workforce, and how by encouraging, recruiting and hiring many more women, the team achieves a tipping point. With the right practices, its possible to build an office in which gender equality outpaces that of the broader community.Deborahs advice to help build diversity from within Helping other women doesnt mean being nice. You might need to say something or share feedback that helps your colleague to stand taller.4. Be authentic. How do you command the attention and respect of men in a world where you are the first woman to ever set foot? Thats exactly whatDr. Jennifer Welter, the first female to coach in the N FL had to do. Dr. Jens advice Be authentic, she says emphatically. Dr Jen advised that the best way to command authority is to be true to yourself. Making a dent in a mans field is not about impersonating a man, or playing the role you think youre expected to play. Its about revealing yourself and believing in yourself. 5. Be confident and empowered from the inside.Along similar lines, Sensei Jaye Spiro, who is a seventh-degree black belt in Karate, advised that success and confidence are best built on the foundation of empowerment. Throughout her career, Sensei Jaye has taught thousands Karate and self-defense, a practice which she came to after having herself been a victim of violence. Her message to the group You can feel empowered, strong and protected from the inside out. Build your confidence from within, and you will face other challenges with more strength, patience and resilience.6. Build alliances with men. They are not your opponent.Alexis Jones, who has worn many hats as a contestant on Survivor, Red Carpet Commentator, FOX Sports Commentator and founder of I AM THAT GIRL, has most recently founded ProtectHer to address the ongoing issue of sexual assault and domestic violence in sports. Through ProtectHer, Alexis has been invited to speak in high school, college and professional locker rooms around the country. How does Alexis get not only heard but even welcomed into these locker room? She makes her message personal, and she makes heraudience of men her allies. She acknowledges clearly that most men are supportive and encouraging of women, and gives them the tools to help become advocates for women among their peers.7. Ignite Progress by Taking Action. In addition to her day job as CEO of Joyus, a video shopping startup, tech veteranSukhinder Singh Cassidybuilt an organization calledtheBoardlistwhich is committed to placing more women in seats on boards of tech companies. Sukhinder deduced that despitea clear case for improved ROIwhen women take b oard seats, approximately 70% of private funded tech boards have no woman member -- mainly because the male founders lack strong female candidates from their networks. So she set out to make a difference. By building theBoardlist, not only did Sukhinder draw attention to this important cause, she helped facilitate the solution. This diverse and wise group of women shared thoughtful and personal advice, and it was empowering just to hear them share their stories. However, as Anne Toth astutely remarked, we look forward to the day when these events are no longer about celebrating firsts. With trailblazers like these, that day cant be very far away.*NOTE General Dunwoody was scheduled to appear as a part of the panel on June 14, but was unable to attend due to time conflicts. She related her experiences to me separately.Fairygodboss is committed to improving the workplace and lives of women. Join us by reviewing your employer
